Javier Villar Ruiz, now based both in Tokyo and Barcelona, has been realizing projects in and from cities across the globe. The studio JVAD undertakes the architectural, urbanism and interior projects while the collaborative platform OCA Projects establishes relationships with craftsmen to develop neo-craft design projects.
He has been a partner at Japanese studio Kengo Kuma & Associates with a collaboration that spans two decades; and with Barcelona based studio Cloud 9.
Some of the architectural projects he has directed are the Princesa Leonor Pedestrian Bridge in Sevilla; the Grand Morillon Student Residences in Geneva, Switzerland; the Shipyard 1862 mix-use complex in Shanghai, China; the ArtLab cultural center at Epfl University in Lausanne, Switzerland; and the new Vera Bridge over the Guadalquivir River in Sevilla, Spain. In the interior design scale, he has directed projects of the relevance of the new Stairs & Atrium interior for the Unesco listed A. Gaudi's Casa Batllo building in Barcelona, Spain; and commercial projects such as the Camper shops in Barcelona, Milano, Paris and Munich and the awarded Endo at Rotunda restaurant in London, UK. He has collaborated with brands like Viabizzuno for the design of lighting fixtures and Nicoichi for the design of lacquered crafted tableware.
Javier has shared his experiences in architecture and design through lectures in universities and congresses both in Europe and Asia.
