in 1994 he founded viabizzuno, the company through which he redefined the language of light in design and in art, leading it until 2022. in 2023 he opened his marionanni studio inside the museo virgola in bologna, where he continues his research and teaching activity.
guided by his principle progettarevocedelverboamare, which unites technique, philosophy, and poetry, he has been writing with light for over fifty years for architects, artists, and institutions around the world.

he has written the light for michelangelo’s moses in the church of san pietro in vincoli in rome, for the medici chapels in florence, for casa batlló in barcelona, and for the royal academy of arts in london. he designed the direction, lighting, and scenography of giuseppe verdi’s opera luisa miller, and he curated the lighting for exhibitions such as van gogh: l’uomo e la terra at palazzo reale in milan, and i marmi torlonia. collezionare capolavori at the musei capitolini in rome.

he illuminated the basilica of santo stefano complex in bologna and created light-poems for teatro alla scala and for the palazzo della civiltà italiana in rome.
he was invited to exhibit at two editions of the venice art biennale and one of the venice architecture biennale, and he has held solo exhibitions at the triennale di milano, villa e collezione panza, and palazzo ducale in sassuolo.

in 2024, together with paolo rizzatto, he won the compasso d’oro for the lamp figaroqua figarolà.
