bruno haas
philosopher and art historian
philosopher and art historian. he studied philosophy and art history in bonn, paris, rome and freiburg (germany).
from 2003 to 2005 he was professor of art theory at aix-marseille university. since 2005 he has been professor of philosophy of art at paris 1 panthéon-sorbonne university. between 2013 and 2018 he was visiting professor at the university of dresden, where he developed an intense collaboration with the city's museums, organizing conferences, exhibitions and scientific activities.
bruno haas developed the method of functional deixis, an approach dedicated to the analysis of singular objects such as painting, music and poetry, with applications also in sculpture and architecture. the method combines empirical observation with new ways of formalizing the results.
among his publications: symptomatologie der reflektierenden einbildungskraft, hamburg, meiner, 2024; le beau et ses traductions, paris, sorbonne, 2021; die ikonischen situationen, paderborn, fink, 2015; beiträge zu hegels wissenschaft der logik, der kunst und des religiösen, berlin, duncker & humblot, 2003; funktionale analyse, edited with bernhard haas, hildesheim, olms, 2010. he has also written numerous essays on the history of colours, on various artists, on the museum and on functional deixis, as well as on broader questions concerning the logic of the human sciences.
alongside his academic work he also pursues an artistic practice in graphic art and painting. three of his large-scale works are held in the museum folkwang in essen (germany): triptychon (1994-1995), fast (1997), 5 (2003-2005).
