in 1994 he founded viabizzuno, the company through which he redefined the language of light in design and art, leading it until 2022. in 2023 he opened his studio, marionanni, inside the museo virgola in bologna, where he continues his research and teaching activities. guided by his design philosophy progettarevocedelverboamare, which brings together technique, philosophy and poetry, for more than fifty years he has been writing with light for architects, artists and institutions around the world. he has written the light for michelangelo's moses in the church of san pietro in vincoli in rome, for the medici chapels in florence, for casa batlló in barcelona and for the royal academy of arts in london. he designed the stage direction, lighting and scenography for the opera luisa miller by giuseppe verdi, and created the lighting for exhibitions such as van gogh: l'uomo e la terra at palazzo reale in milan and i marmi torlonia. collezionare capolavori at the capitoline museums in rome. he illuminated the basilica complex of santo stefano in bologna and created “poesie di luce” for teatro alla scala and for the palazzo della civiltà italiana in rome. he has been invited to exhibit at two editions of the venice art biennale and one of the architecture biennale, and has held solo exhibitions at the triennale di milano, villa e collezione panza and palazzo ducale di sassuolo. in 2024, together with paolo rizzatto, he received the compasso d'oro for the lamp figaroqua figarolà. his works are included in museums and public and private collections in italy and around the world. in 2025 he created the fondazione marionanni and founded his school, the marionannischolé.
