in 1994 he founded viabizzuno on his own, a company through which he redefined the language of light in design and art, leading it until 2022. in 2023 he opened his design studio inside museovirgola in bologna, where he continues his research and dedicates himself to teaching.
guided by his concept progettarevocedelverboamare, which combines technique, philosophy and poetry, for over fifty years he has been writing with light for architects, designers, museums and institutions all over the world.
he has written light for michelangelo’s moses in the church of san pietro in vincoli in rome, for the medici tombs in florence, for casa batlló in barcelona and for the royal academy of arts in london. he directed, designed the lighting and created the set design for the opera luisa miller by giuseppe verdi, and curated the lighting of exhibitions such as van gogh: man and the earth at palazzo reale, milan, and the torlonia marbles. collecting masterpieces at the capitoline museums in rome.
he illuminated the complex of the basilica of santo stefano in bologna and created light poems for teatro alla scala in milan and for the palazzo della civiltà italiana in rome.
he has been invited to exhibit in two editions of the venice art biennale and one of the architecture biennale, and has held solo exhibitions at the triennale di milano, villa e collezione panza and the palazzo ducale in sassuolo.
in 2024, together with paolo rizzatto, he won the compasso d’oro for the lamp figaroqua figarolà.
his works are included in museums and public and private collections in italy and around the world.
in 2025 he created the marionanni foundation and founded his school, marionannischolé.
